Emily Vardeman of Short Story Longarm Quilting

Emily Vardeman believes there's a story behind every quilter and every quilt. After making her own quilts for over a decade, she started Short Story Longarm Quilting to become a part of other quilters' stories, offering edge-to-edge computerized quilting services as well as basting, seaming, trimming, and binding services, to both local clients in central Iowa as well as mail-in clients.

Emily knew Jess Zeigler and had admired her work, so when she was considering starting her own longarm business, it was natural to reach out - "After a conversation with Jess and looking into Rookie Season, I made the decision to go for it!"

"Rookie Season gave me all the information I was hoping for and so much more! If you are thinking about or planning to start a longarm quilting business, it is totally worth the time, money and effort."

Emily hoped Rookie Season would help her learn how to get her business started - from the basics of longarming to knowing the business side of things. Hope started turning into reality right from the start of the course: "The lessons were so helpful. After the first week of material became available, I had things I could start doing and was excited about getting them done. I felt like I had enough time between lessons to get most things done."

In addition to the lessons, Emily also participated in the group Zoom calls. "It was helpful to hear the questions that other people had, and to be a part of a group that was working toward similar goals."

"Rookie Season connected me with a group of fellow longarmers, which has been extremely important in the success of my business."

Emily noted that for her, Rookie Season was indispensable; "I couldn't have started my longarming business without it. Because of Rookie Season, I was ready to start having clients as soon as I opened and I think because of what I learned and applied, I did have clients right away."

At the conclusion of Rookie Season, students are offered a discount on annual Longarm League membership, which Emily purchased. "I definitely recommend continuing with the Longarm League after Rookie Season. There is a wealth of knowledge there and a group of wonderful people."
